Half Hull America's Cup Defender 1895 Wooden Model Sailboat Ship Vanderbilt New
Half Hull America’s Cup Defender 1895 Sailboat Model. Hand Built Defender 1895 Half Hull Wooden Model. This expert level, highly detailed, museum quality, Defender 1895 model is brand new, fully assembled and ready for display (not a kit). This America’s Cup half hull model was crafted in mahogany and tropical hard woods by the traditional plank on bulkhead method. After the bulkheads are laid and the hull lines trued, the hull is planked with individual wooden strips to form a smooth silhouette. The Defender 1895 model is then sanded, hand painted with dark green topsides and a grey boot stripe. The hull is stained and varnished to a mirror-like finish. The half hull is then mounted on a ready to hang wooden plaque, with an engraved brass nameplate. The half hull model is built exactly to scale as the original Defender w as. The task required skillful craftsmen hundreds of hours to accomplish. The Defender was commissoned by William K. Vanderbilt to be designed by Nathanael Greene Herreshoff and built by the Herreshoff Manufacturing Company in 1895. It was Herreshoff’s second victorious America’s Cup defender design. The yacht was designed in the utmost secrecy and her construction was shrouded in mystery. Nobody was allowed to enter the yard especially photograhers and the press. Defender was a sloop with all-metal construction: steel, aluminum, and manganese bronze. But as from the first tests, the boat suffered from a phenomenon about which little was known at that time: corrosion due to electrolysis appeared after she was launched on June 23rd, 1895. Defender defeated the New York Yacht Club’s Vigilant then went on to defend the cup against British keel cutter Valkyrie III. The half hull model plaque measures 29.5″(75cm) x 7.8″(20cm) and the model measures 23.6(60cm) long from bow to stern. It’s an historic half hull model sailboat that is sure to become a treasured family heirloom. Many More America’s Cup Yacht Half Hull Model Sailboats Are Available.
